Mustangs Routed by Generals, 32-0

By Charlotte Volpe (September 17, 2006)

Nothing really worked offensively or defensively for the Mustang varsity football team Friday as they were defeated by Stonewall Jackson, 32-0.

The Mustangs could not produce much on offense, losing several fumbles and being forced to punt numerous times by the Generals’ defense. They also lost sophomore running back Joel Chandler, who was carted off with an injury during the second quarter. A key play did come in the second quarter when sophomore John Mann converted on fourth-and-short, but the Mustangs were forced to punt later in that drive. Excitement was generated later in the quarter when senior linebacker Ryan Larcamp appeared to run a Generals’ turnover back for a touchdown, but the officials called it back because of a personal foul committed by the Mustangs.

After that, the next highlight for Mason came in the third quarter when senior defensive end Ed Hickey recovered a Stonewall Jackson fumble, but the offense was unable to capitalize, fumbling the ball back to Stonewall Jackson. After that, the Mustangs never really threatened.

The Mason varsity cheerleaders kept the crowd going throughout all four quarters despite the rout and the rain that began in the second quarter and continued off and on for the rest of the game. Kudos should also be given to the George Mason pep band, which started out with around 70 people, but midway through the second quarter, most of them left because it had started raining. However, about 25 people stayed and also helped keep the crowd in the game, led by junior trumpeter Nathan Ward. “We may have lost the game, but we won here,” Nathan Ward said, holding his trumpet up.

The Mustangs next play on Friday, September 22, at Luray High School. Their next home game is on Friday, October 6, versus Goochland High School.
