Mustangs Beat Mountaineers;
Clinch Season Championship

District Tourney Slated for Tuesday

By Derek Blodgett and Andy Pribulka (September 15, 2006)

The golf team played its final regular season match Wednesday, defeating Madison County 180 to 185. The win gave the Mustangs the regular season district championship and secured a spot for Mason in the regional tournament regardless of how the team fairs in districts, which begin Tuesday.

Junior Mike Straub came in with Mason's top score of a 43, followed by Sean Follin, Cody Peebles and Andy Pribulka, who scored 45, 45, and 47, respectively. These four paved the way to the win and for Mason first “team” regional since 2004.

Thus, the team finished first in their district in regular season with a 9-1 record, beating Madison County whose record stands at 8-2. Earlier in the season, in fact, it was Madison County that handed Mason their only loss. For the six seniors on the team, Andy Pribulka, Sean Follin, Cody Peebles, Derek Blodgett, Thomas Yancey, and Alex Goetting, this was also their last match at their home course, Fairfax National.

Helping the George Mason Golf team clinch the Bull Run District championship, senior Andy Pribulka (the team's #1 golfer) swung his way to the impressive score of 47. The team beat out close rival Madison County on Wednesday for the championship at Fairfax National, Mason's home course.

The golf team had a rough start this year by losing its coach, Dan Wilkie, two weeks into the season. Nonetheless, the players pulled through the setback and achieved their number one goal, to win the regular season championship and obtain that automatic spot in the big regional tournament.  Captain Sean Follin commented, "Of course losing your coach after the season has started will affect any team. It will set good players back, but the great players will push through it and become district champions. I think the whole team agrees when I say Coach Broderick did a fantastic job stepping in and no one else could have done a better job."

The golf team will travel to Rappahanock County on Tuesday to hit off the Bull Run District Tournament.
