After Storm Delay, Mason
Rains Out Jeb Stuart
Stonewall Visits Friday

The rain started shortly before the Mustangs took the
field, and after a series of lightning strikes, the game was delayed for
a half-hour. The crowd gathered in the new Mary Ellen Henderson
Middle School, and once the game begun again, the electricity from the
stands transferred onto the field.

From
the second the game started, the Mustangs dominated the Jeb Stuart
Raiders, with the final score being 42-0. Playing
aggressively and riskily, the Mustangs scored their first points
on a safety by senior Cody Reynolds. After the following kickoff, the Mustangs marched
down the field, scoring on a pitch play to sophomore Joel Chandler. Another risky move followed when the Mustangs
decided to try for a two-point-conversion, which they converted.
Turnovers were the name of the game
for the Raiders, however, and on their next drive, they fumbled
the ball right back to Mason. After
a short drive, leading into the second quarter, Mason scored again,
making the score 17-0, on a rumble into the end zone by sophomore Antoneo Folks. At halftime, after a second touchdown by Chandler,
the score was 23-0. |

After the intermission, Mason came out, recovered a fumble
at the Raider 24-yard line, and made a risky call in going for it on fourth
down, which, unfortunately, didn’t pay off. They
carried the halftime score into the fourth quarter, but then the scoring
deluge began. A touchdown by junior
Sean Mondragon made the score 29-0, and another
touchdown by junior Lex Layton shortly afterwards
made the score 35-0.
Jeb Stuart got the
ball back, and after lots of defensive pressure, Mason forced a Raider
to cough up the football, and the fumble was recovered by sophomore Charlie
Mann on the 46-yard line, which prompted another scoring drive by Mason,
this one closing out with an 18-yard run by junior Josh Jenkins, making
the final score 42-0.
The victory evened the Mustangs’ record at
1-1, following their opening 14-13 loss in overtime to Dominion High
School a week earlier. The Mustangs host Stonewall
Jackson this Friday at 7:30.
