Wrestling
Veterans Carry Team in First Match
By: Andy Millar (December 9, 2006)
Laden with veterans, the Mustangs did quite well in
their first wrestling match against Loudoun County last Saturday, December
3.
Jake Schwind, one returning sophomore, finished out
the day with three wins at the 145 pound weight class. Sophomore Timmy Hillegass at 140 showed improvement from last year in gaining
a win.
At 171, Ramsey Hannah, one of three retuning seniors,
had a breakout performance by beating all of his opponents in stellar
fashion with speed and strength, proving that he is state champ material.
Juniors Steve Parks and Barratt Kennett, both of whom
posted up a 3-0 and a 2-0 record respectively, dominated the 189 weight
class.
Another retuning senior, Rick Schumann, at 215, annihilated
his first four opponents with first period pins and had a hard fought
win against a Stone Bridge opponent.
The third retuning senior, Andy Millar, was out with a knee injury
and could not participate in the tornament.
That wasn’t the whole story. The younger
wrestlers also posted up some good numbers showing promise for the future.
Josh Meyers,
Mark Palmieri, and Sam Dittmar all showed
poise, as some of them took to the mat in their first matches of their
career.
Exchange student Manny Yousipov stepped up to the challenge
and wrestled varsity at 135, posting up a win and some good instincts
on the mat.
But probably the man of the day was Teddy Reukert, a first year wrestler, who in only three or so weeks
went out on the mat and beat two of his opponents and showed great composure
throughout each match. Though his last match, a heartbreaking 2-3 loss
to Stone Bridge, Teddy showed that in three weeks you can improve dramatically
The Mustangs are at Fairfax High School last night and
today Saturday for the prestigious NOVA Classic.
