Relay Qualifies for States
By Charlotte Volpe (December 21, 2006)
Last
Saturday, in their only home meet of the season and their first meet
as a varsity letter sport, the boys’ swim team defeated
Clarke County High School by a score of 121-30 and Strasburg High School
by a score of 93-73, while the girls’ team lost to Clarke County by a
score of 83-64 and to Strasburg by a score of 81-71.
The boys’ team was led by their “A” 4x100-yd
medley relay team, comprised of juniors Jeff Williams, Andrew Breen,
and Kyle Nette and sophomore Carlos Clark, which not only won the
race but also became the first state qualifiers on Mason’s newest team.
The boys’ 4x100yd freestyle relay team of Nette,
Clark, sophomore Jack Cashin, and freshman
Sam Parker was also triumphant. Nette also
won the 200-yd individual medley (followed closely by Clark)
and was second in the 100-yd butterfly. Andrew Breen dominated the freestyle
events, winning both the 50-yd freestyle and 100-yd freestyle. Williams
won the 100-yd backstroke. Finally, Parker won the 100-yd breaststroke
and the 500-yd freestyle (the latter earning him the nickname of the “Distance
Mule”).
The girls were led by junior Jourdan Frankovich,
who won the 200-yd freestyle, was second in the 100-yd breaststroke,
and was a member of two winning relays: the 4x50-yd medley relay and
the 4x100-yd freestyle relay. Freshman Kelley Frank also dominated on
those two relays and in her individual events, the 200-yd individual
medley and the 500-yd freestyle. Junior Krisie Southern
also participated on the two relays and placed second in the 100-yd freestyle.
Finally, senior Mariam Alshagra was
third in the 100-yd freestyle and participated on the two relays.
The team’s next meet will be on January
4 against Clarke County and
Strasburg at Signal Knob Pool in Strasburg.
