Mustangs Upset Cougars
First Time in Years, 14-7
By Charlotte Volpe (November 4, 2006)
In a stunning development, the Mustangs upset Manassas Park High
School 14-7 last night. The Cougars
were last year’s Bull Run District Champions, Region B Champions,
and Group A Division 2 runners-up
in the state.
Both teams had entered the game with identical
records, 4-4 overall, and 3-0 in the district. Mason had not
beaten Manassas Park for
a decade and the eight senior Mustangs, who had never enjoyed
a win over the Cougars, had vowed before the game to avenge the
previous losses.

Senior Ben Zorn was
quoted in an earlier article in this newspaper as saying, “This game is everything.” Now the
Mustangs with a 4-0 district record have the edge for the regular
season championship.
The game started off on a slow note, with both
teams exchanging punts and fumbles during the first half. The
first half ended with the score at 0-0. In the second half, however,
things started to heat up. After receiving the second-half kickoff,
the Cougars drove down the field but gave up a key fumble to
the Mustangs, who converted on an Eddie Huber touchdown run with
a one-point coversion to make it 7-0.
After that, the teams traded a few punts and fumbles until early
in the fourth quarter when Huber recovered a Cougars’ fumble
and returned it for a touchdown to make it 14-0. The Cougars
did strike back late in the fourth quarter on a touchdown run,
but their last-ditch effort to tie the game fell incomplete.
