Cross Country
Girls Team Ends Season With
3rd Place Finish in State
Meet
By Margaret Lipman (November 17, 2006)
The
varsity girls’ cross country team concluded its season with a third
place finish and a score of 106 points in Saturday’s Division A State
meet at Great Meadows. In the
team competition, perpetual state champs Clarke County took first place with a score
of 46, while Altavista came in second with
82.
Junior
captain Susanna Sullivan turned in a great race for Mason with a time
of 19:53, taking third place in the individual 5k behind Mariah Hagadone of
Buffalo Gap (19:29) and Sophia Holmes of Clarke County (19:37). The other six members of the team also helped
Mason to its respectable bronze finish, all staying within two and
a half minutes of each other. Freshman
Courtney Ready took 25th place with a time of 22:12, closely followed by junior Karina Robarge in
28th with 22:27. Senior captain Elizabeth Fortenberry finished
39th with a time of 23:16, while junior Lydia Fairfax
finished in 50th with 23:50. Senior Emma Goetz (24:26) and sophomore Taylor
Moot (24:39) rounded out Mason’s varsity, finishing 60th and
66th, respectively.
The
results of the state meet almost exactly matched those of the preceding
Region B competition, which took place November 1 at Panorama
Farms, Charlottesville. On the girls’ side, the top three teams in
the state all came from Region B, with Clarke County once again winning the region,
followed by Altavista and GM. Sullivan also took third place at Regionals.
The
Mason boys’ team was unable to make it to the state meet, finishing
sixth (out of 15 teams). Freshman
Miles Butler was Mason’s top finisher (19th, 18:26), just short of making the
All-Region team. Also running
for boys’ varsity (and finishing within a minute of each other) were
sophomore Louis Henninger (36th, 19:10), senior captain Fritz Langford
(46th, 19:20), freshman Teddy Rueckert (47th, 19:23), sophomore Carlos Clark
(52nd, 19:31), senior Will Stewart (62nd, 19:38), and junior Andrew Breen (63rd, 19:53).
