Mustangs Bullied by Bulldogs, 21-12

By Sara Greenberg and Derek Blodgett (October 6, 2006)

Although no one is claiming that injuries are the reason for the Mustangs 21-12 loss to Luray last Friday night, it is no secret that injuries at key positions have taken their toll on the team recently.

Last Friday night at Luray High School, the Mustangs took on the Bulldogs, who scored early and never looked back. The Bulldogs scored first in the first quarter by bulldozing their way to a two-yard run. George Mason answered back quickly with a short run by senior Eddie Huber. This touchdown was Eddie Huber’s first touchdown of the young season. Huber ended the game with over 100 rushing yards, in addition to his typically solid play on defense. The Mustangs were looking solid, about to go into halftime trailing 7-6, but Luray hooked up for a passing touchdown late in the second quarter. Luray came out for the second half as hot as they ended the first one by busting the Mustangs’ defense for a 40-yard reverse play.

The Mustangs defense stood strong while trailing 21-6. Senior Ben Zorn collected two fumble recoveries and Junior Sean Mondragon also recovered one himself. Trailing 21-6 in the fourth quarter, Sophomore Antoneo Folks ran in for another Mustang touchdown, but the Mustangs missed their second extra point attempt of the day. The game ended with Mason taking the 21-12 loss, putting them at 1-3 for the year.

While not being used as an excuse, it’s clear that injuries to key players have thwarted the Mustangs’ progress this year. Here, senior tight end Cody Reynolds watches on crutches from the sidelines in Friday night’s game against Luray. (Photo by Sara Greenberg)

Mason has been affected by some crucial injuries this year. In addition to losing their starting quarterback, the Mustangs have also lost running backs, linebackers and a tight end due to injuries. The injury bug kept biting during Friday night’s game against Luray, when junior Josh Jenkins suffered an injury during the game in the beginning of the third quarter from a tackle during a Luray kickoff.

The Mustangs will take on another set of Bulldogs this Friday at home, when they will host Goochland High School, who is considered to be a contender for the state title. The Mustangs have a bitter taste in their mouth after last year’s loss to Goochland High School which beat Mason on the last play of the game.
