The Mustangs pulled off a thrilling upset of then-#5
ranked Madison County High
School, 25-19, in the annual Homecoming Game
Friday night at Moore Cadillac Stadium.

The Mustangs
started out in fine fashion, recovering a Mountaineer fumble on
the opening drive of the game. They then converted with a long Mike Schwengel rushing
touchdown, and Ben Zorn kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. After
forcing the Mountaineers to punt on the following drive, an Eddie
Huber touchdown run and a missed extra point made it 13-0. However, Madison County responded
with a touchdown on their next drive, and the first quarter ended
with the score 13-6 in favor of the Mustangs.
The Mustangs struck again in the second
quarter with another touchdown run by Eddie Huber to make it 19-6,
but the Mountaineers struck again on their next possession, and
the score stood at 19-13 Mustangs at the half.

to four rushing touchdowns, two by Eddie Huber, one by Mike Schwengel,
and one by Antoneo Folks. The Mustangs won 25-19 against the number
five team in the state. (Photo by Charlotte Denekas) |
After receiving the second-half kickoff, the Mustangs
drove down the field but eventually turned the ball over on downs. The
Mountaineers capitalized with a touchdown, but the extra point was blocked,
making the score 19-19. The score remained that way until partway through
the fourth quarter, when Antoneo Folks rushed
for a touchdown to make it 25-19. The Mountaineers did make one last-ditch
attempt to win the game late in the fourth quarter, but they were immediately
stuffed by a sack each by Ed Hickey and Ben Zorn. A
Mountaineers’ Hail Mary pass attempt fell incomplete.
At halftime of the game, the 2006 Homecoming
Court was announced. Every year, two representatives from the GR8s, freshmen,
sophomores, and juniors, as well as six seniors, are elected by their
peers to the prestigious Homecoming Court. This year, the representatives
were GR8s Daniel Fletcher and Gemma Seidita, freshmen Miles Butler
and Tyler Morris, sophomores Jack Cashin and
Haley Turner, juniors Josh Jenkins and Morgan Moscati,
and seniors Xavier Alarcon, Margaret Allen,
Derek Blodgett, Anna Duning, Francisco Brady,
Sara Greenberg, Mathew Carl, Margaret Jones, Judah Chandler, Alina Kaye,
Daniel Lim, and Sarah Meyer. After much anticipation, Daniel Lim was crowned
Homecoming King and Anna Duning Homecoming Queen.
The Mustangs’ next game is on Saturday, October
22, at Rappahannock County High
School. Their next home game is on Friday,
November 3, against Manassas Park High
School.
