On ‘It’s Academic’

“The
largest colony of penguins in the world is not in Antarctica but in what capital
of Scotland?” With
the correct answer of “Edinburgh,” Mason’s “It’s
Academic” team was propelled to a 20-point tiebreaker victory
over John F. Kennedy Academy High
School and The Bullis School
earlier today.

The team, comprised of senior captain Margaret Lipman,
junior Peter Davis, and senior David Maher, traveled
to the NBC studio in Washington, D.C. along
with their coach, social studies teacher Mr. Jamie Scharff,
and their alternates, senior Matt Peppe and junior Brennan
Downey.
Mason jumped to an early
lead in the first three rounds, but in the fourth round, Bullis came
back to tie the score at 535 points. George Mason then
answered the tiebreaker question correctly, and with
that clinched the victory. Later on in the season, Mason
will face two other winning teams in the playoffs. The
eventual “It’s Academic” winner receives thousands of
dollars for scholarships.

The road to winning was not easy, however. Lipman, Davis, and Maher were faced with numerous tough
questions, such as “The hibiscus is the official flower of what
state, where visitors are often greeted with flower leis?” and “Simplify
this expression: (32)(3)/3.” Despite such difficult
questions, the team rose to the challenge and pulled away for
the victory.
The team’s win will be shown
on NBC (Channel 4) on Saturday, October 7, 2006 at 10:30 a.m.
