Thirty musicians auditioned for the All-District X Band at JEB Stuart High School last Saturday. Out of those students, two were selected to perform in the first high school band (the Wind Ensemble), ten were selected to perform with the second high school band (the Symphonic Band), and two were selected as alternates. Also, twelve 8th graders auditioned for the Junior All-District X Band and out of those students, nine were selected to perform with the band, and another was selected as an alternate.

Senior clarinetist Elena Martinez placed eighth overall out of 85 clarinet players who auditioned, thus earning a spot in the Wind Ensemble for the fourth straight year. Junior French horn player Morgan Moscati was the only other Masonite to earn a place in the top band. She placed fourth out of 32 French horn players who auditioned.

In addition to Martinez and Moscati making it into the top band, ten Masonites made it into the Symphonic Band. Senior flautist Alicia Hartstack placed 13th overall out of 80 flautists, making it the third straight year that she has earned All-District honors. Senior oboist Elizabeth Fortenberry made the Symphonic Band for the second straight year by placing fifth overall out of 17 oboists. Two clarinetists, freshman Wendy Herbst and junior Amelia Nystrom earned their first high school All-District recognitions by placing 27th and 32nd respectively. Junior trumpeter Jeff Williams earned his first high school All-District recognition by placing tenth out of 64 trumpeters. Two French horn players, sophomore Kaatrin Netherton and freshman Jenny Lewis, earned their first high school All-District honors by placing tenth and eleventh respectively out of 32 French horn players. Junior alto saxophonist Emily Perry also earned her first high school All-District recognition by placing fifth overall out of the 31 who auditioned. Finally, two baritone players, junior Alex Prewitt and freshman Jack Western, both earned All-District recognitions (Prewitt’s second high school recognition and Western’s first) by placing fourth and fifth respectively out of the eleven who auditioned.

Senior flautist Charlotte Volpe and junior trumpeter, Meredyth Duncan were also named fifth alternate for the high school bands.

The eighth graders who were selected to the junior All-District Band were: clarinetist Anuraag Sensharma (16th out of 43), trumpeters Crawford Taylor (3rd out of 29), Dane Warner (10th), and Daniel Drawbaugh (14th), trombonists Jay Rodock (2nd out of 17), Matt Baker (6th), and Jakob Hand (9th), tubist Jordan Robarge (2nd out of 10), and percussionist Hannah Wertime-Walker (1st out of 24). In addition, flautist Gemma Seidita was named as the third alternate.

Kudos should also be given to the following people who auditioned but unfortunately did not make it: junior flautist Chelsea Brobst, freshman tubist Samuel Jackson, senior trumpeter Rachel Taylor, 8th grade flautist Abby Johnson, and 8th grade alto saxophonist Ross Wilson.
