Scholastic Bowl
Mustangs Dominate at Home,
Bringing District Record to 9-0

By Margaret Lipman (December 13, 2006)

The George Mason Scholastic Bowl team continued its overwhelming success in the Bull Run District during the only home meet of the season on Monday evening.  Facing off against teams from Clarke County, Manassass Park, and Strasburg (Rappahannock had a bye this week), the Mustangs upped their record to an undefeated 9-0.

In the first game on Monday, the Mustangs broke their scoring record, racking up 390 points to Manassas Park’s 70.  Next, they faced off against Clarke County, winning 305-120.  The last match of the night was against Strasburg, which resulted in a score of 275-145 in Mason’s favor.  The team was led by veteran players Matt Peppe, David Maher, Peter Davis, Margaret Lipman, and Peter Breen with help from K.K. Bracken, Brennan Downey, and Adam Gann.  GMHS faculty members Mr. Pepper, Mrs. Herrington, Mr. McAdam, Mrs. Weber, and Mr. Foster served as scorekeepers, timekeepers and “Quizmasters” for the evening.

The Mustangs were undefeated last year in both the Bull Run District and in Region B, losing only to state champs Radford High School in the state finals last February. The team hopes to repeat last year’s performance this season and perhaps win the state title, which Mason last took home in 2003.

The George Mason Scholastic Bowl works out a challenging problem, or at least senior Matt Peppe (far right) does, while junior Peter Breen and seniors Margaret Lipman and David Maher look on.
