Spirit Breaks Loose Today
As Homecoming Begins
By Anna

“Yeea-Haw!” yelped vice principal, Tim Guy, and
later, SCA president, Will Stewart, over the intercom Thursday
morning, declaring the commencement of annual Spirit Week. While
other high schools may scratch their heads at the idea of students
dressing in various costumes over a five-day period to demonstrate
spirit, Masonites are familiar with this longstanding and equally
amusing tradition. Although this year’s sprit week is split by
a three day weekend, the student body is no less enthusiastic about
the class competitions which will be topped off by the Homecoming
football game and dance at the end of next week.

Various “Heroes and
Villains,” representing the theme selected by senior class representatives
at the annual SCA Retreat, will be roaming the halls over the
following days including those dressed to correspond with the
Wild West and Disney, then beginning Tuesday, costumes imitating
comic book heroes, pirates and spies. The final day of spirit
week, Friday, will bring back “red and white day,” which was
not included last year with the addition of the eighth grade.
In addition to the dress-up days, classes will compete in a
variety of events to score points for their grade. Hall decorating
is to take place this afternoon and on Friday the grounds party.
However, a new approach will be taken this year with the grounds
party as students will meet in the cafeteria to create “giant
heads.”

The giant heads, decorated to correspond with the
class theme, will be made out
of laundry baskets, chicken wire and papier-mâché. The concept, proposed
by Mr. Guy, is to race the heads around the track during halftime at
the football game.
Tuesday of the following week, beginning
after Columbus Day, will involve students in a kickball competition
between the eighth, ninth and tenth graders on Tuesday afternoon. Wednesday
night at 7:30, the legendary
junior-senior powder puff game will take place, this year with particularly
high stakes as the junior and senior girls are ultra-competitive. Thursday
night’s pep rally, to be MC’d by Graham Downey, will culminate the
class-on-class competition with numerous events including pie-eating,
a three-legged race, arm wrestling and tug-of-war. The spirit-week
winners will also be announced at the pep rally.
Finally, Friday, October 13, will include
an all-school tailgate at 6 p.m. before
the football game against Madison County.
During halftime, students will race the “big heads” and the Homecoming
Court 2006 will be presented. The dance, themed James Bond 007, takes
place Saturday night from 8 to 12 p.m. Tickets, costing $15 a piece, will be sold Tuesday
through Friday before and after school. Before schools students should
go to Ms. Mears’ room, A116, in the morning and Mrs. Whitlock’s room,
A132, in the afternoon. Another first, Addison Blakemore and Thomas
Yancey are planning to set up an intricate light show as well as DJ
the homecoming dance.
Be sure to check the “Spiritometer” throughout
the week to follow the competition.
