JV Show
Annual Talent Show Raises
$2,700 for Juniors, Prom
By Charlotte Volpe (October 30, 2006)
The annual Junior Variety Show served its purpose
well in not only showcasing numerous talents throughout the school,
but also helping to raise money, some $2,700 for the prom, which
is traditionally funded by the junior class.

The show started out with the Block 1 Jazz Band,
which is made up of members from the Concert Band, playing, “Sing Sing Sing,” a
swinging tune which featured eighth grader Harris Schaeffer on drumset and
sophomore Will Walton on trumpet. They were followed by the Block
2 Jazz Band, which is made up of members of the Symphonic Band,
playing “In the Doghouse,” another swinging tune featuring junior Yusof Becker
on baritone saxophone.
After the jazz bands’ equipment was
moved offstage, freshman Becca Ward sang “Angels
from Montgomery” with
Mr. Northrip accompanying her on guitar.
She was followed by freshman Liz Morrison playing “Sonatina #2” on
piano, and then eighth grader Ross Wilson sang and played his guitar
to “Mr. Tambourine Man.”
All of those instrumental and vocal
acts transitioned to talented dancing from sophomores Hillary Shea and
Janine Baumgardner, 8th grader Hannah
Leopold, freshman Hannah Boning to “It’s My Life” by Bon Jovi.
They were followed by The Cartographers? (juniors Luke Dinsdale,
Jake Shapiro, Peter Davis, Adam Frost, Khalil Karrakchou, and Joseph Kendra)
performing “Danger Zone.”

The hard rock of The Cartographers? was followed
by the much calmer “Nocturne in E Flat Major” played by junior Seth
Ensign on the piano. The last act before the intermission was “I
Heart to Color” with seniors Ben Ballou and Eliot Walker, junior
Jordan Balzer, and Mr. Ballou. This group first took a moment to
sing “Happy Birthday” for Mr. Ballou, whose 54th birthday is on Monday,
and then playing “Emergence.”
Following the intermission, the 26-member
percussion class came on stage to play “The Heart’s Cry” as well
as another song. They were followed by senior Rachel Taylor playing
a medley of songs on her banjo. The next act, which was probably
the funniest as well as the most persuasive of them all, involved
seniors Will Stewart and Graham Downey as well as several members
of Opus Zero pleading for money for the prom, which will cost around
$19,000. They were followed by sophomore Nick Settje showing off
his juggling talent, which was then followed by the GMHS Faculty
Band (Mr. Powell, Ms. Dean, Ms. Webster, Mr. Northrip,
and Mr. Ballou) performing “School of Rock.” The band was followed
by eighth grader Anuraag Sensharma playing “Tarantella” on
the piano, which was followed by ERROR: Operator (junior Jake Shapiro,
sophomore Jeff Ralph, and Alex McFarland) playing “Jailbreak.” Their
act was followed by senior Francesca Sales singing “Lay Me Down” while
being accompanied by her sister, freshman Megan Sales, on guitar.
The next act, which was probably the
most internationally talented of them all, was freshman Audrey Borgman singing “Michiyuki” in
Japanese. She was followed by sophomore Abby Lewis playing “Deux Nocturnes” on
the piano. The final act of the evening was Basmati (sophomores Mike
Guy, Jeff Ralph, Louis Henninger, and Brandon Graig) playing “Feedback Crown,” which caused a few laughs
on Friday night when Henninger broke his
drumstick in half while wildly playing the drumset.
Overall, the JV Show was an excellent
showcase of talent, and it raised a lot of money for the junior class.
