The senior girls defeated the junior girls 7-0
in the annual Powder-puff football game at Moore Cadillac Stadium
last evening.
The seniors controlled the game
with their dominant defense, led by Katie Mitchell, Anna Duning,
and Danielle Pollack,
who repeatedly forced the juniors to turn the ball over on downs
and making many “tackles” for loss. On the offensive side of the
ball, running back Catherine Duarte amassed 80 yards rushing, including
a 15-yard touchdown during the second quarter that ended up being
the only score of the game. Duarte also
appeared to have a 40-yard touchdown later in the game, but it
was called back because of a clipping penalty against the seniors.
Quarterback Roxanne Sweeney also rushed well during the game.
When asked how they won, senior
offensive coordinator Derek Blodgett said, “When the opposing coaches decided to use
an I-formation, we knew we could use Katie Mitchell as our secret
weapon and use her to push the center on top of the quarterback
to cause a fumble. We also found out that we had another secret
weapon when Catherine Duarte chased down Coach Joe Muskett during
practice. We knew that if we got her in the open field, we could
win. I didn’t know Catherine would do so well, but she was a real
force for our offense.”
Spirit points were tallied not only for who won
and who lost, but also for how many people from each class came
out to cheer their classmates on. The seniors won that category
as well as the game. The freshmen placed second, the juniors third,
the sophomores fourth, and the GR8s fifth.
