African Culture Group Mesmerizes Students In PTSA-Sponsored Assembly
Members
of the Memory of African Culture, a not-for-profit cultural and educational
arts organization dedicated to fostering greater awareness of the
cultures of African people, demonstrate how a gourd became a musical
instrument. In the photo at right, music students learn about
African music from a member of the group. The group performed in
an assembly on Friday and then conducted classes for interested music
students. The assembly was titled “Music and Dances of the Manding
Traditions” and was made possible by a grant from the GM PTSA. The
musical group represents traditions from the cultures of Malinke,
Bambara, Mandinka,
Diakhanke and other related Manding peoples of Mali, Senegal, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Cote d’Ivoire. (Photos by Francisco Brady) 5-5-07
