These
six eighth graders placed ninth out of 56 teams from throughout
the world that competed in the Odyssey of the Mind competition
last weekend in East Lansing, Michigan.“To finish in the top 10 is
a huge achievement in this competition, which is truly a
world competition with teams
from China, Singapore, Germany, Canada, Poland and many other countries,” said Odyssey
coach Lynn Fletcher. The head judge in
the competition told Fletcher that her team “was terrific and all the judges
were impressed with the way the team members worked so seamlessly together."
The
teams are given problems to solve and one of the ones Mason faced was titled “I’m
Only Thinking of You.” According to Fletcher, it “featured a self-centered character
named Jen who is trying to escape from the mysterious Bob. To avoid capture she
travels through time and causes disasters of historic proportions such as the
separation of the super continent of Pangea, the eruption
of the volcano Vesuvius, and the stock market crash among others. The surprise
is that all these disasters are caused because Bob and Jen are playing a game
of tag through time.” From left to right are Rachel Hassan, Mollie Breen, Victoria Pender, Daniel Fletcher, Clark Williamson,
