Budding Biologists Finding Life in Challenging Conditions on the Anacostia
Members
of Dr. Peter Mecca’s Biology II class traveled to Washington,
D.C., Thursday and took a boat out on the river to perform
water quality studies and chemical tests on the water in
the Anacostia River, which the Natural Resources Defense
Council terms “a poster child for America’s tragically neglected, abused urban
waterways.” Above, juniors Robbie MacIinnes, Noemi Torres
and Carley Robinson look on as leader Eric presents
some of the life that can be found on the floor of the river. After taking water
samples and even doing some fishing, the students confirmed that while much work
can be done to improve the river’s water quality, it does support living organisms.
