A Change in the Political Climate Democrats Control Congress
For the First Time Since
1994
For
the first time in 12 years (longer than most Masonites have
been following politics), the Democratic Party took control of
the Senate
and the House of Representatives.Although
the midterm elections occurred on Tuesday, the Democrats’ victory was sealed
on Thursday when Senator George Allen (R–VA) conceded defeat to Democratic challenger
Jim Webb, giving the Democrats a majority of 51 seats
in the Senate. Here, junior Peter Davis
excitedly points out the election results, which coincided with the resignation
of embattled Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, the
primary architect of the current war in Iraq. (Photo by Margaret Lipman)11/10/06
