The

state championship against Radford High School 5-2, with Alex Goetting,
James An, Thomas Yancey, and Daniel Butler winning their singles and
had the chance to win it with Daniel Lim who played a three-set thriller
only to lose 7-5 in the final set and send the match into doubles.

Alex
Goetting and James An started the doubles off well by winning the first
set easily 6-2 but fell in the
second set 6-4. Meanwhile it wasn’t looking good on the second court
as Thomas Yancey and Xavier Alacorn were down a set and looking tired.
Finally in the third set, Goetting started putting the pressure on and
got himself and An pumped up and ready to win. Goetting was serving
to win the match and the championship and wasted no time in doing it.
On the final point he hit a booming serve in, went to the net and put
it away with a quick, hard, and accurate forehand.
Earlier
in the day both Goetting and An had won their individual doubles state
championships easily in straight sets without any real challenge.
Even
though we were in Radford High’s home town and they had more supporters
the Mason bottom eight made more noise than their home fans, cheering
at every opportunity and not letting Radford getting pumped up.
