Mendenhall
started the game for the Mustangs, striking out eight Hornet batters
and allowing only three runs over seven innings. The Hornets were
led by first baseman Brooks Colin who went 1-2 at the plate with
one run batted in. Defensively the Hornets catcher, Matt Fisher,
allowed only one Mason base runner to steal a base the entire game.
The ‘Stangs played “small
ball” until the sixth inning, when the Mustang bats started cracking. Paul Mene hit
a single through the second and first baseman with one out to get to first base. Mendenhall then was hit
by a pitch, advancing Mene to second
base, and putting himself on first base. The next batter, Brandon
Ting, stepped up to the plate and hit a grounder to the Hornet’s
shortstop, forcing an out at second base. This left Paul Mene at
third base and Brandon Ting at first base with two outs. After
the first pitch to Mason batter Matt Dorr, Brandon Ting safely
stole second base. With two strikes and two outs in the bottom
of the sixth, Matt Dorr hit a single up the middle to drive in Mene and Ting, making the score 5-3. In the top of the seventh
inning Mendenhall came in and closed out the game for the Mustangs,
sealing the victory. |
