The boys’ and girls’ track and field teams finished out
regular season play this past Wednesday with the year’s final dual meet,
held at Strasburg High School. The
boys’ team tied with the Strasburg Rams, while the girls’ team, despite
a valiant effort, was defeated. Although
victory was just out of reach for the Mustangs, the meet was marked with
high performances for several members of both teams.
The Lady Mustangs, although up against tough competition,
had a solid showing against Strasburg. Among
Mason’s first place finishers were Sushmita Gorhandas in the high jump,
Ashley Thompson in the 100m dash and the 200m dash, and Karina Robarge
in the 300m hurdles. Once again,
the ladies 1600m relay team took an easy first place with an outstanding
time of 4:36.
The Mason boys also competed admirably against Strasburg. As
usual, Travis Greene easily took the 100m dash and the 200m dash. However,
due to a heel injury, Greene was unable to compete in his best event, the
long jump. It is unclear whether
Greene, the defending Virginia A state long jump
champion, will be able to compete in the event come next week at the Bull
Run district meet. In
addition to Greene’s victories, Derek Devore won the 110m hurdles, and
took second in the 300m hurdles. In
the distance events, Kassum Rahawi won the 800m run, and Daniel Benn took
first in the 3200m run. For the
throwers, Bob Bumgarner took first place in the shot put, with a colossal
throw of 40’10’’.
The track and field team will compete next Wednesday at Manassas Park High
School in the Bull Run District Championship.
