Girls’ Varsity Soccer
Mustangs Beat Panthers, 5-0;
Team Off to a 3-1 Start

By Alex Pender and Julie Dorsey (April 7, 2006)

The varsity girls’ soccer team came out with their first district victory in a 5-0 shut-out against Rappahannock High School on Wednesday night.  This most recent win brings the girls to a 3-1 record with the only lost of the season to AAA Marshall.

Junior Katie Turner started off the scoring with a hard outside shot that the Panthers’ goal keeper could not keep her hands on.  Addressing the team, Coach Carol said, “You girls started off slow in the first 15 minutes, but after the first goal you picked it up and started playing soccer.”  The remainder of the first half was then played on the attack.  Freshman Kim Kenny scored the second goal, assisted by a perfect cross from Katie Turner.  The last two goals of the half were scored by freshmen Abby Stroup and Mayassa Chehata.

During the second half of the game, Katie Turner scored another rocket shot early on.  The score remained at 5-0 for the remainder of the match.

Now that the district season has started, senior Julie Dorsey says, “We are really anxious to go and play Clarke -- they are the team to beat once again.”  They will have to do so without starting senior goalie Alex Pender, who is out due to ankle surgery.  “It puts a lot of pressure on our defense now that she [Alex] is not there; hopefully she will be able to play come playoffs” Julie explained.

The team is already looking better than it did last season, with the addition of key starting freshmen and sophomores including Mayassa Chehata and Abby Stroup. Seniors Hayley Wood and Julie Dorsey are back controlling the defense while senior Jesse Porzel and juniors Katie Turner and Roxy Sweeney are leading the attack for the Mustangs.
