Mustangs Fall to Eagles 3-0

By: Julie Dorsey and Alex Pender (April 27, 2006)

The soccer team lost a devastating 3-0 game against longtime rival Clarke County Tuesday night at home. The three goals were scored in the first half, leaving the Mustangs’ defense exhausted.   “The talented Clarke offense knew exactly where to place the ball behind the net, strategically shooting two high shots behind the 18-yard line, making it difficult for our goalie [Meredith Kerrigan] to reach,” said senior defender Julie Dorsey.

This was the first time the team faced Clarke since the upsetting loss at the Regional Finals hosted by Clarke last season.  “It was hard getting rid of our nerves before the game because of all the history between us. Unfortunately this took us the first half to get over,” said senior defender Hayley Wood.  The Mustangs’ defense worked hard last night with the ball remaining in their defensive half for the majority of the match.

Going into the second half the Mustangs put junior Roxy Sweeny into goal.  “Although she’s a key player on the field, everyone knows she will work just as hard as goalie,” said senior captain Alex Pender.  This was proven after saving several difficult shots on goal throughout the entire 40 minutes she played in the net.

The loss dropped Mason’s record to 3-2-1. The Mustangs tied Arlington’s AAA Washington & Lee last Tuesday 1-1 in double overtime.  The Mustangs play next at Manassas Park at 5 o’clock today and have a chance to avenge Clarke County away on May 12.
