Faculty Defeat Seniors 47 – 41
in
‘ Tassel Classic’ Basketball Game
By Margaret
Lipman (April 18, 2006)
The GMHS faculty proved that youth is no match for experience
in the first annual Tassel Classic faculty-student basketball game Friday
before last. Despite the students’ spirited
playing and announcer Bob Bumgarner’s resounding warning to seniors that “if
you don’t win, you might not graduate!”, the faculty stayed ahead from
the very start, eventually winning 47 – 41.

The game started off with a two-pointer by senior Paul Mene,
who, along with Chris McMahon and Scott Lemen, brought the students’ first
quarter score to eight points. The
faculty managed 12 points in the first quarter, though, including
a three-pointer from girls’ tennis coach Chris Madison at the
buzzer. The students tried to catch up throughout the
second quarter, but despite more scoring by Mene and a three-pointer
from Megan Bledsoe, the first half ended with the teachers ahead 21 – 15.
During halftime, players and fans alike took part in a half-court
free throw contest. Coach
Madison shocked the crowed by making two shots in a row, while
Joel Yatsko, Eddie Huber, and Bledsoe each made a basket. Sadly,
Principal Bob Snee did not. |

Both teams upped the scoring in the third quarter, but the
faculty pulled away even further, to 35 – 28. The
students were able to close the gap to within two points in the fourth
quarter with players scoring across the board. But when the buzzer rang at the end of the
game, the faculty had proved victorious by a margin of six points.
The faculty team (which, like the senior team, was co-ed)
consisted of players representing the math, English, social studies,
physical education, foreign language, and special education departments,
as well as several sports coaches and representatives from custodial
services, maintenance, security, and administration. The
team was coached by Bill Broderick and Vicki Galliher. The seniors’ team was made up of many players from the girls’ and
boys’ varsity basketball teams, as well as other experienced Masonites. This
year marked the inaugural “Tassel Classic,” and judging from the game’s
strong attendance, the students will have another chance to prove themselves
next year.
