Stars to Carry the Team

By Jared Allan and Paul Mene (March 17, 2006)

Of the nine starting players on the varsity baseball squad, seven are returning from last-year’s squad, including five who earned All-District and/or All-Region honors last year. With an experienced coaching staff, including head coach Adam Amerine, Jay Wright and coach Labryan Thomas, the team hopes to repeat its trip to the regional tournament.

Senior pitcher John Schwengel practices on the mound in preparation for his first start this year Brentsville, March 18. Schwengel will be one of two starting pitchers for the Mustangs this year, as well as Byron Mendenhall. Last year Schwengel made second Team All-Districts and looks to have another productive season. The team will be led by captain Jimmy Piscopo at shortstop, as well as Byron Mendenhall and John Schwengel as pitchers. Matt Foley has switched from first base to catcher to replace Will Straub. Brandon Ting and Paul Mene will hold down the outfield, covering right and center field, with Eddie Huber in left field. John Root will be the starting 3rd baseman, making the transition from second base last year. Either Mendenhall or Schwengel will defend second base on nights they are not on the mound.

Coach Amerine said, “The group is full of talented young men who have stayed determined in the off-season and have set high expectations.” He hopes for another Bull-Run District title as well as a regional berth. Senior Matt Foley said of his off-season, “I have put a lot of time and effort into practicing and preparing for the coming year. On average I practiced seven hours a week, which included batting clinics [in which the entire team participated] and fielding drills.”

Over spring break the team will travel together to Florida for a week-long tournament, where they will play against teams from all around the country. Senior center fielder Paul Mene said, “Through this trip the team will really come together.”
