Mustangs Stomp Hornets 72-59;
Advance to 2nd Regional Game Tonight
By Jared Allan,
Paul Mene (February 23, 2006)
The Mustangs defeated Wilson Memorial High
School in the fist round of the regional
tournament 72-59 Tuesday night at Monticello High
School. The fast-paced contest allowed
the Mustangs to play their game and throw off the Hornets who are known
for their slow-paced offense. The win earned the Mustangs a match tonight
against Chesterfield High
School and a win would earn the Mustangs
a berth in the state tournament. Chesterfield is
known for its athleticism and will be a challenge for the Mustangs
to keep the pace in their favor.
Mason led 42-24 going into halftime,
with help from Travis Greene, Valdis Kravalis and Alex Goetting. Coming
out of the halftime break
Mason had the mentality of a 0-0 game, knowing the Hornets would not just
give up. Coach Broderick said to his team, “They are too well coached,
and they have been here too many times before…they are not just going to
let us take the game from them.” His words inspired the boys to defend
the halftime lead. The Hornets came out of half time well rested and eager
to close the lead. The Hornets’ coach decided to change point guards in
the third quarter in hopes of changing the slow paced offense to a fast-paced,
quick-tempo offense.
The Hornets made the fourth quarter fun,
closing to10 points, but strong showings by Mason’s regulars held the Hornets
at bay. Jack Settje had 27 points and 11 rebounds, Travis Greene 13 points
and 11 rebounds, Paul Mene 10 points and five
rebounds, and Valdis Kravalis had eight points and 10 rebounds.
