Boys’ Basketball
Mustangs Win Big
Against Emmanuel Christian

By Will Stewart (February 2, 2006)

Both the JV and varsity boys’ basketball teams defeated their respective opponents from Emmanuel Christian Monday by great margins. The JV team won 56-34, and the varsity 70-54. Both games were characterized by strong, aggressive defense by Mason, including a ferocious full-court press.

This tactic brought the varsity team to a quick 10-2 lead in the first quarter. The Flames called a timeout, but couldn’t find an answer at that point or for the rest of the night. Senior Paul Mene led the Mustangs with 18 points in the first half, most of them coming from easy lay-ups as a result of the numerous steals generated by the defense. The first half was finalized by two slam-dunks, one by Mason senior Travis Greene, and one by the Flames’ center. At the break, the score stood with the Mustangs at 40 and the Flames at 23.

Greene slammed it for a second time in the opening minute of the second half. Emmanuel Christian was more of a match for the Mustangs during the third quarter, but as the game wound to a close, the deficit seemed too big to overcome. All the GM players were granted playing time from head coach Bill Broderick as the Mustangs secured the win.

With 20 points, Mene led the Mustangs in scoring, closely followed by junior Jack “Bird” Settje with 19, including four three-pointers. Greene scored and Valdis Kravalis scored eight and seven points, respectively, while junior Alex Goetting added six.

The Mustangs’ next home game is a big-time rematch against district rival Clarke County, this Friday, February 3 (JV @ 6:15, Varsity @ 7:30).  The Mustangs hope to see a lot of Masonites in the stands as they try to avenge a loss from earlier this season.
