But Will Compete in Regionals
(February

Both
the girls’ and
boys’ teams lost in their unique double header matches against arch-nemesis
Clarke County in the district finals last night on the Eagles’ home court.
The girls lost 66-58 and the boys lost 71 to 49.
The good news for
the Mustangs is that their regular season record guaranteed both teams
an appearance in the regional tournament and the boys will play next
Tuesday and the girls Wednesday at Monticello High School in the first
round.
Coincidentally,
both the girls’ and boys’ teams had qualified for the championship games
by beating the Strasburg Rams in the past few days. A report of the girls’ victory
can be found elsewhere in this sports section.
In
Thursday night’s
game, the Mustangs defeated the Rams 54-45 for their third victory of
the season against Strasburg. Alex Goetting led the scoring with 16 points and junior Jack Settje added 13.
In the first and
second quarters Mason maintained a strong lead over the Rams, yet after
halftime the Rams came out strong. Sophomore Mike Schwengel found
himself in foul trouble and Adam Chandler stepped in and contributed
well.
After a tightly
fought third quarter the Rams closed within one point, but the Mustangs
fought back to clinch the victory.
