In Win-or-Go-Home Contest

The boys’ varsity basketball team will
host the Strasburg Rams in a battle for a regional birth Thursday night
at 7:00 p.m in the Mustang Gym.
The winner of the game will advance to the District Championship Friday
night to play the winner of the Clarke County vs. Manassas Park game.
So far this season Mason has already
defeated the Rams twice, hoping to repeat for the third time; yet in the
sports world they
say it’s always hard to beat a time three times in a row. The team will
look to sophomore point guard Mike Schwengel, junior Jack Settje and
seniors Paul Mene, Travis Greene, and Valdis Kravalis.
If the boys advance to regionals, it will be the first
time since the 2001 season, when the team included Nate Hamme,
Matt McFarland, Ben Griffin, Kenny Wilson, and Jimmy Brock.
Fortunately, the Mason team has defeated Manassas Park twice
this year, but unfortunately, they have lost twice to Clarke County,
including a nail biter, double overtime one-point loss a week and a half
ago.
“Hopefully, we can break through Strasburg’s patented
3-2 defense and come out with a win,” said senior Paul Mene about
the upcoming game. About Friday’s possible match- up against Clarke County,
senior Kris McMahon said, “Hopefully, we can forget about the past games
against Clarke and prevail.”
If the ‘Stangs win Friday night
they will be the top seed going into the regional tournament next Tuesday,
February 21.
