Boys’ Varsity Basketball
Mustangs Trample Briar Woods
By: Kris McMahon (December 8, 2005)
In their first regular season game, the Mustangs defeated
the Falcons of the new Briar Woods High School, 62-35 last Friday, December
2. The boys out-hustled and out-played the Falcons on their home court,
leading to the embarrassing 62-point blow-out.
Both Travis Greene and Mike Schwengel added
to the Mustangs’ victory with 11 points each. Schwengel, “The
Professor,” led the team’s attack with 10 assists. Valdis, “Vladi,” and
Greene dominated the baskets with a combined 21 rebounds. Valdis caused an uproar in the gym when he cut back door and dunked for
two of his four points.
Ben Zorn was a “beast” in the paint, racking up
nine points and four assists. Jack Settje “Bird” had
8 points including two threes. Paul Mene also assisted
in the victory by driving the lane and putting seven points on the board
along with five rebounds.
The Mustangs shot only 17 of 35 from
the free throw line. This is one concern of coach Broderick’s, he feels
that later in the season games will be closer and victories will depend
on the points from the foul
line.
The Mustangs play again on Friday, December 9 against
Word of Life, at 7:30.
