The Mustangs were defeated by rival Marshall High
School 59-54 last night away in what has
become known as the “Battle of
the Pike.” Before the action began, Marshall was
predicted to score an easy victory, with their top-scorer Dixon leading
the way.

Marshall’s
victory seemed certain after the first quarter ended 16-6. With
a series of drives by Paul Mene and Travis
Greene, the Mustangs battled back to take a six-point lead in the
third quarter. The game was physical and intense. A substantial
crowd packed Marshall’s
gym, chanting and shouting for each team.
In the mist of all the chaos and screaming,
Greene performed what Mason coach Bill Broderick called “one of
the most amazing high school basketball plays I’ve ever seen.” Greene
received the ball, tricked-out one Marshall player,
and then flew over another for a slam-dunk. In total Greene led
the Mustangs with 18 points and he also had 12 rebounds and four
steals. |

Mene was
the second leading scorer with 13 points and five rebounds. Valdis had
7 points but dominated in defense with 12 rebounds and 5 blocks. With
this performance, Broderick said that he expects to see victories in the
near future. The Mustangs next game is December 14 against Stuart High
School.
