Mustangs Dominant in
54-14 Victory over Luray

By Will Stewart (October 6, 2005)

Travis Greene’s 83-yard return for a touchdown on the opening kickoff set the tone for what sprouted into an exciting, non-stop action, GM-dominated football game this past Friday at the Jack Gambill Field. The night was enjoyed by all, except for the visiting Luray Bulldogs, and was aided by spirited performances by the George Mason Cheerleaders and Pep Band.

Greene took the ball straight up the middle all the way to the end zone on the first play of the game, and the pace didn’t slow from there. The Mustang defense held Luray to 3 plays and a punt, giving GM the ball at Luray’s 35. Greene ran once and Luray committed a five-yard penalty, and on the next play, John Schwengel ran for 23 yards to make the score 12-0. A two-point conversion by Eddie Huber made it 14-0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Luray return man Nathan Weatherholtz matched GM’s first touchdown, with an 82-yard scamper of his own. Luray’s kick failed, making it 14-6.

The Mustangs didn’t slow down on their next drive. Starting at their own 37, the impressive Mustang offensive line helped the backs to rattle off runs of 15, 28, and 13 yards, by Greene, Schwengel, and Huber, respectively. That set up Greene’s second touchdown, a 7-yard run. The point-after was blocked, leaving the score 20-6.

Luray’s next drive also ended quickly, stifled by tackles in the backfield by Schwengel, Sean McCrary and Greene. The Mustangs got the ball back and added yet another score, this one a 23-yard run by quarterback Eric Blush.

It wasn’t until the Mustangs got the ball back yet again that the first quarter came to a close, with the score 26-6.

The second quarter showed signs of slowing as far as scoring. Greene’s third touchdown didn’t come until there was only 1:12 remaining in the half.  Luray got the ball back and tried to hurry, but the drive and half were ended by John Schwengel’s interception.

On their first possession of the second half, Blush connected with Schwengel through the air for a 28-yard touchdown. The score stood 40-6 until Schwengel ran in another one.

With the game seeming to be out of Luray’s reach, the fourth quarter passed fairly quickly. Mike Schwengel scored on a 25-yarder, and Luray running back Andy Shirley scored on a speedy 71-yard run, making the final score 54-14.

The Mustangs travel to Goochland next Friday. Their next home game is Homecoming, on October 21st, when they will face the Rappahannock County Panthers.
