The first quarter was all about setting the tone, much
of which was dictated by the Mustang offense. The first play of the
game was a long break for an un-touched Greene, as he ran for almost
80 yards in front of a wild homecoming crowd. The play was called back
for a holding penalty, however, but Greene scored on a 53-yard run three
plays later. He had his second touchdown with a five-yard-run later
in the quarter to put the score at 13-0.
The second quarter remained in the
Mustangs’ favor,
as they hiked up the score to 34-0. Greene had his third touchdown of
the night with a long 73-yard run, in addition to John Schwengel’s two
touchdowns in the second quarter; a three-yard run and a 43-yard reception.
The George Mason Dance Team took the field at halftime
for its performance, followed by the introductions of the Homecoming
Court candidates and the announcement of
the King and Queen,
The third quarter showed little signs in change of
pace, as the Mustang defense repeatedly forced turnovers and held the
Panthers to three-and-outs, requiring them to give the ball back to
the Mustang offense. Quarterback Eric Blush led the first drive of the
half down into Panther territory, then broke
tackles and pounded in an eight-yard touchdown run; followed by a 22-yard
touchdown run from Jimmy Piscopo.
The following kickoff was the only time Rappahannock got
into the end zone, as Panthers’ receiver Tim Fitzmorris picked
up a squib-kickoff for an 80-yard touchdown return.
The Mustangs responded right back, as sophomore running
back Mike Schwengel swiftly ran for an 81-yard
kickoff return for a touchdown on the following play. “That was kind
of bizarre…it’s rare to see back-to-back kickoff returns for touchdowns,” said
senior quarterback Eric Blush.
The Mustang coaching staff made sure to integrate all
of the players on the sideline into the game in the third and fourth
quarters, which gave some of the players some playing time to demonstrate
the depth they offer the team. Sophomore running back Sean Mondragon had
one run during the game, notably closing the scoring for the evening
with a 24-yard touchdown at the end of the third quarter to finalize
the score at 61-7.
Having improved their district record to 2-0, the Mustangs
look forward into the much more challenging part of the season as a
test of pride and consistency. Preparation and performance will be very
important for the Mustangs as their next two games are against Clarke County tonight
and Virginia ‘A’ State Champions Manassas Park next
week. These two teams battled down to a difference of one yard last
Friday, when Clarke County couldn’t
convert a two-point conversion to win the game. This Friday the Mustang
defense is going to be tested at home against a very “legit” running back in the Bull-Run district, Clarke County’s
Lee Liggins.
When asked about George Mason’s outlook on the playoffs,
head coach Tom Horn replied, “If we win the next three games, we get
to play a fourth. If we win again, a fifth.”
