Mustangs Take on Panthers Tonight
After 35-13 Victory over Mountaineers

The Bull-Run District competition will be kicked into full force tonight for the Mustangs as they welcome the Rappahannock Panthers for Mason’s legendary homecoming game at 7:30 pm.

Under the lights of Moore Cadillac Stadium, the Mustangs come into the game eager for another district victory, after they took the win over the Madison County Mountaineers for their homecoming game last Friday night. After a short week and a loss to the Goochland Bulldogs two weeks ago, the Mustang offense re-emphasized its need for success as they produces almost 500 total yards total to put their district record to 1-0.

The Mustangs took command of the game early, with two long touchdown runs of 73 and 60 yards from senior running back Travis Greene and two fumble recoveries from the stingy Mustang defense. With senior quarterback Eric Blush held out of the game with an ankle injury, backup sophomore quarterback Mike Schwengel stepped up to put the offense into gear at its normal powerful pace. In the second quarter Schwengel threw his first varsity touchdown pass to senior tight end Scott Lemen, who filled in for senior Gregg Curtin who on the previous play, was taken out of the game with a sprained knee.

The Mustang defense held its control against the Mountaineers, holding them to only 13 points and allowing the offense to control possession for most of the game. Travis Greene added 238 total rushing yards to his career stats for this game, which helps him close in fast on his goal of 1,000 total yards for the season.

Senior running back John Schwengel ran for two touchdowns and 131 yards total, with sophomore fullback Eddie Huber and senior fullback Sean McCrary supporting the offense with their pounding run attacks.  The Mustangs were able to give their sophomore players some significant time in the game, and improve the Mustangs’ player depth into the varsity level of play. The game tonight against Rappahannock starts the next series of district games against Clarke County, Manassas Park and Strasburg (senior night), which are all must-wins for the Mustangs if they hope to be a contender into the Regional playoffs.
