Mustangs Upset Panthers, Go to
4-3 in Districts, 10-4 Overall

By Paul Mene (October 19, 2005)

With an energetic crowd wildly rooting them on, the Mustangs pulled one of the biggest upsets of the season, beating district rival Rappahannock 3-1 last night at home.

The Panthers had been undefeated until Strasburg knocked them off last week and “they killed us last time, 3-0,” said Mason’s senior veteran player Christie Ankeney.

The Mustangs, under the tutelage of head coach and Mason grad Lauren Luck, won the first game, lost the second, and won games three and four.

From the beginning of the match, the girls came out swinging and were led by Sabrina Whitney’s and Katie Mitchell’s powerful spikes. However, even with this effort, the Mustangs found themselves down in the fourth game.

During the fourth game, the crowd rose to its feet chanting “LET’S GO MASON” at the top of their lungs. With the encouragement of the crowd, Kate Root and Brittany Head rallied their team with strong serves and Ankeney made several key digs and captain Emma O’Hara’s had many middle hits that the Mustangs stormed back to take the fourth game and clinch the upset.

The victory set Mason’s district record at 4-3 and its overall record at 10-4, its best at this point in the season in at least five years. The Mustangs take on the Strasburg Rams Thursday.
