Lady Mustangs Win 3 in a Row
After Loss to Eagles

By: Paul Mene and Gregg Curtin (January 21, 2006)

The varsity Lady Mustangs have snatched three straight district victories these last two weeks, clobbering Strasburg 62-38, Rappahannock 61-42, and Manassas Park 60-27 as the team racked up the points and improved its district record to 5-1. Earlier this month the Lady Mustangs came off a disappointing loss at Clarke County, as their senior center Alex Pender was benched for an ankle injury. Senior forward Maggie O’Toole stepped up to the challenge, and had one of her best games yet as she dropped 24 points for her away team in its first district match-up.

A couple of members of the local basketball fan group, otherwise known as the “Mason Madness,” also traveled out to support the ladies as they took on the district rival.

After senior center Pender recovered from her injury the team chemistry has definitely come together and the Mustangs have been on fire in the district and burning opponents left and right. Pender led her team against Strasburg earlier last week with 10 points and seven rebounds, while Ashley Thompson supplied the team-high nine rebounds and seven points of her own. Sophomore Co-Captain Meredith Hamme has been the young spark that has supplied the Lady Mustangs with complementary points this week, as she and Pender combined for 16 points in Tuesday’s match-up against Rappahannock.

Last Thursday was the only home game the Lady Mustangs have played this week, and they definitely showed their strength as they beat the Manassas Park Cougars 60-27. Senior Maggie O’Toole is on track for one of her best seasons, as she is very close to the 1,000 career point mark.
