Mustangs Go 1-2 in Home Meet;
But Signs Are ‘Encouraging’

By Nick Pitas (January 14, 2006)

The wrestling team continued its season at home Wednesday evening with two District matches against Madison and Clarke Counties, as well as a match against Edison High School of Springfield. Although poor weather, and tardy referees threatened to cancel the match prematurely, a series of quick phone calls and a little patience saved the day. Despite starting nearly an hour late, each team in attendance was able to participate in the three scheduled matches.

In their first match of the evening, the Mason team squared off against district rival Madison County. A lack of experience and cold feet hampered the Mustangs’ performance, as only three victories were recorded. Senior Nick Pitas won by technical fall (15-0), while junior Rick Schumann and sophomore Steve Parks pinned their opponents. With a combination of poor performance and forfeits, the Mustangs fell by a disappointing score of 54-23.

The second match of the night proved much more satisfying for the Mustangs, as they were able to defeat the Eagles of Clarke County 38-30. Leading by two points going into the final match, an instrumental pin by senior Trevor Quillin sealed the win, much to the delight of his teammates and fans. The pin marks the second of the season for Quillin, who has reversed his fortunes of late, snapping a lengthy losing streak in style.

The final match of the day against Edison resulted in another Mason team loss. Freshman Jake Schwind dominated his opponent in a stellar 10-0 effort. Joining Schwind in the winner’s circle were seniors Nick Pitas and Trevor Quillin. Although eventually losing, freshmen David Ray and Timmy Hillegass put in strong efforts against much more experienced opponents.

The day, although resulting in a 1-2 mark for the Mustangs, was an encouraging sign for the coaching staff. “We saw some good things, and some bad things,” remarked coach Bryan Harris. “Hopefully we can build on what we have so far. We expect a great deal from our young guys, and they’re going to need to step up if we’re going to succeed as a team.”

The Mustangs were without senior captain Tashdid Khan, who is recovering from a knee injury, and hopes to return within a few weeks. While wrestling at the prestigious Northern Virginia Classic, Khan damaged ligaments in his knee against an opponent from Virginia Beach.
