Game Review
Situated in Ancient Athens, ‘God
Of War’ Is One of the Best

By: Kris McMahon (February 7, 2006)

The video game time period is ancient Athens. You are Kratos, a young and fierce Spartan warrior. Once he was the leader of a ruthless and powerful Spartan army, Kratos and his army ravaged and destroyed anyone they encountered. That is, until they fought a barbarian army numbering in the thousands. In the midst of the battle Kratos’s men were being massacred and Kratos himself would soon meet his end. Knowing this, Kratos called for Ares, the god of war, to aid him, and in return Kratos swore to become his loyal servant forever. Ares grants Kratos the Blades of Choas.

With these terrorizing deadly weapons, Kratos slays his barbaric enemies. Ares is determined to make Kratos the strongest and most feared warrior in the world. In doing so Ares sets up Kratos to kill his own family so he will have nothing to lose. After finishing this horrible deed, Kratos realizes what he has done. Driven by rage and vengeance, Kratos vows that he, himself, will destroy Ares. Athena helps you do this by making you her warrior. Haunted by your past, you embark on a journey to obtain the power to kill a god. Finding and using Pandora’s Box is your only hope to defeat a god.

This one-player, action adventure game is amazing. Armed with two blades, and special powers of the gods, you battle your way through many breathtaking environments. The levels are intricate, complex and vast. Everything in the game has a purpose and all the objectives connect to lead you through the stages of the game. There are multiple bad guys, ranging from Medusas, to Minotaurs. Along the way your fighting skills increase and your magic powers are upgraded, until you become the ultimate warrior. This game does have its fair share of gruesome bloodshed, but it doesn’t stop there, you also must conquer puzzles and find hidden treasures.

“God of War” does a good job of mixing fighting and puzzle solving in the epic adventure of Kratos. The game has so many maneuvers that you can do it is hard to ever get bored and put down the controller. The graphics in the game are high quality, and the game play is outstanding. Beware: All who attempt this game should clear their schedule three days prior to starting, because once you begin, bathroom breaks will be the only time you put down the controller.
