‘Underworld Evolution’: Action 10
Times Matrix’s Fighting Scenes

By: Kris McMahon (February 2, 2006)

Underworld Evolution, draws the viewer into the war raging between vampires and lycons (werewolves). Director Len Wiseman does an excellent job of continuing the ongoing conflict between these two species, in his sequel of Underworld. Although the story line is quite detailed it’s easily understood. The history of each character is explained and past events in the first movie become clear.

Selene (Kate Beckinsale), a vampire warrior, and her close friend Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), a hybrid (mix of werewolf and vampire) are being hunted by both lycons and vampires. Adding to their problems is Marcus (Tony Curran), one of the first vampires ever born who is pure blood and very powerful. William, the first werewolf ever born, is Marcus’s brother and he has been caged in his coffin for centuries.

Marcus is determined to unleash his locked-up brother but first he must attain a key and a map showing where his brother is confined. Marcus is led to Selene and Michael. Michael has the key which opens William’s coffin and Selene is also the only living vampire that remembers the way to William’s coffin. Selene and Michael must not surrender the key. Death and chaos will triumph through out the world, if William is released. The movie is action packed, literally. Every other second, gun brawls and savage fights capture your attention and keep you on the edge of your seat. I thought the explosions, martial arts, and weaponry in the movie were incredible. If you took five minutes of the Matrix’s fighting scenes and multiplied it by 10 that is the level of action packed inside this 105 minute film.

One flaw is that people continued to change and become new creatures with different powers. Sooner or later the war won’t even be between vampires and werewolves. In the movie Selene bites and sucks the blood from the father of all vampires, in doing this she gains all of his powers. Her close friend and lover Michael is already a hybrid; I can’t imagine what their children will look like! The movie was very entertaining; I recommend it for anyone seeking blood, violence and gore. What’s cooler than watching a hybrid rip the jaw off of a giant werewolf, anyway?
