Sophomore Yali Lin meets with Mr. Edwin Bancroft Henderson, II, President of the Board of Directors of the Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation. Lin’s letter to the editor
won first place in the annual E.B. Henderson letter writing
contest and she was recognized during the Tinner Hill
celebration last weekend, held this year at the Mary Ellen Henderson Middle School. Ms. Henderson, for whom the new middle school is named, was a civil
rights activist and the wife of E.B. Henderson, an African-American
who had thousands of letters published in newspapers across
the nation. Henderson’s letters contributed significantly to the nation’s
understanding of the need for justice in the realm of civil
rights in the
20th Century. The annual contest awards 10 cash
prizes to students who write winning letters to newspapers
on multicultural relations. Lin’s letter earned her the
first prize of $1,000. Junior Hunter Burkey’s letter
won $50.00 and junior Addison Blakemore won $25.00.
