First Ever Career Expo a Success

By Dana Cazan (May 6, 2006)

Twenty different exhibitors gathered in the Cafe for the first ever George Mason High School Career Expo Wednesday after school.  Mary Beth Connelly, head of the Falls Church City Business in Education Partnership (BIE), and Ann McCarty, assistant principal, organized the event for students to come and listen to the professionals share their personal insight and experiences about their career paths.

Students traveled from booth to booth, learning about fields varying from well-known jobs such as medicine to more unique careers such as Urban Planning; however, the professionals had more to talk about than what they do.

Offering realistic advice to students, Dr. Steve Zullo, an expert in the field of Biotechnology from the National Institutes of Health, said, “Concentrate on being able to express yourself,” in regards to enabling others to understand the points you are trying to make, and who you are.

Further guidance came from social worker Mr. Mark Hosmer who works for the company Homestretch, which assists homeless families in the area.  “Don’t worry about it (your career path), try lots of different things,” said Hosmer.

Attracting a significant amount of students, the expo gave students a basic idea of what exists beyond their high school careers. “I hope the expo broadened students’ perspectives,” said McCarty. After viewing the faces of students during the event, her hope seemed to be fulfilled.
