‘I Wonder Why’
5 Earn Awards in Reflections Contest
(May 23, 2006)

All five students whose submissions to the annual PTSA Reflections contest were submitted to the Fairfax Cluster for judging in December have earned awards for their artwork at that level.

In the Junior Division eighth grader Jiali Ma received an Award of Merit for her literature entry and an Award of Excellence for her visual arts entry.

All four Senior Division entries, including literature by freshman Anna McDonald, musical composition by sophomore Peter Davis, photography by senior Marta Savova, and visual arts by senior Laura Lin, received the Outstanding Interpretation of Theme award and were forwarded to District judging. The theme this year was “I Wonder Why.”

At the District level, Marta Savova earned an Award of Excellence and Laura Lin received an Award of Merit.

Beth Peppe, chair of the Reflections contest, announced in a memo that two new arts categories have been added to the contest for 2006-2007. These categories are dance choreography and film/video production. For dance choreography, the choreography must be the work of one student and include up to three dancers, but the choreographer does not have to be one of the dancers.

This photograph by senior Marta Savova earned an Award of Excellence at the District level in the PTSA’s Reflections contest whose theme was “I Wonder Why.” Marta titled this photo, “I Wonder Why Nothing Is the Same Anymore.”  Said Marta, “I took this photo on a Bulgarian train, while passing a recently flooded area in the country. Everyone, including this elderly couple, was looking out the windows, observing the damaged and strangely beautiful landscapes.”

For film/video production, the student must be the director, screenwriter, and camera person, but does not have to appear in the video. For both categories, entries on video tape or DVD may be up to five minutes long.

The PTSA also announced that the Reflections theme for next year will be “My Favorite Place.” Wrote Peppe, “Students are encouraged to work on their entries over the summer as the deadline will be earlier next fall than it has been in previous years.”

Specifications for the entries will be posted on the web site soon or can be obtained from Beth Peppe at EMPeppe@aol.com
