Community
activist Dave Eckert explained the history of Arbor Day to
many assembled eighth graders at the annual Arbor Day celebration
yesterday on the lower campus near Haycock Road where a great many trees have been planted
during the past few years. Organized
by eighth grade English teacher Ms. Cay Wiant, this year’s
celebration witnessed the planting of a young American Elm
tree. Eckert explained that many similar elm trees around the
community and throughout the nation have been afflicted with
a fungal ailment called Dutch Elm Disease, which clogs root
systems. However, this particular tree is immune to this problem
and has a long, promising future ahead of it. The ceremony
was attended by Mason principal Bob Snee and Superintendent
Dr. Lois Berlin. (Photo by Danny Hickle)
