Students Paint, Write, Draw, Photograph
Their Way to ‘Reflections’ Success

By Alex Holachek (February 10, 2006)

The Reflections program recently rewarded the creative endeavors of George Mason students by recognizing a number of student works. The PTA-sponsored art, literature, music composition, and photography competition received 65 entries from George Mason last fall, all in some way exploring the theme “I Wonder Why.” The six works that were judged “Outstanding Interpretation of a Theme” were:

Laura Lin’s oil painting They Wouldn’t Play With Me
Peter Davis’s piano composition Flight
Marta Savova’s black and white photograph I Wonder Why Nothing is the Same Anymore
Jiali Ma’s pencil drawing of a tornado
Jiali Ma’s poem I Wonder Why
Anna McDonald’s poem After the Storm

Other Mason students received “Awards of Excellence”: Melissa Benn, Jack Brorsen, Gordon Matthewson and Bailey Walton.

Rounding out the seventeen total acknowledgements were the seven students who were selected for “Awards of Merit”: Daniel Wang, Jenny Piperno, Chantal Cough-Chulze, Alexa Peyton, Kassim Rahawi, Abby Stroup and Christina Dacanay.

A PTSA meeting  February 1 recognized and displayed the works of these students, who seemed unfazed by their success. Attempts to obtain quotations about the artists’ awards were met with humble evasions. Laura Lin, when asked about her striking winning oil painting, replied, “Um, you can make up a quote for me, if you want.” Peter Davis, in response to an inquiry about his piano piece, said only, “It’s cool.” He then broke into an original rap that, no doubt, was but another manifestation of his musical abilities.

Senior Laura Lin’s painting “They Wouldn’t Play with Me” won “Outstanding Interpretation of the Theme” in the annual PTSA Reflections contest. The theme this year was “I Wonder Why.”

The Reflections theme for next year is “My Favorite Place.
