Hopes are high as rehearsals, which began in early
October, continue apace for the theatre production of the winter
musical Kiss Me Kate which is scheduled for December
1, 2, and 3. The play’s script,
which features sundry different characters, sceneries, and dialogue,
accents the diversity of people associated in the production.
Kiss Me Kate, directed
by Ms. Pamela Ricker-Spicer, is a musical comedy set in Baltimore during
the 1940s, in which a theatre production group is presenting William
Shakespeare’s The Taming of
the Shrew, the Bard’s classic comedy of the war between the sexes.
However, both play and reality collide on and off stage causing hilarious
conflicts between characters when the director and leading man of
the play (played by Andy Parker) is cast opposite his tempestuous
ex wife (Katie Gordon), the star of the play.
“The chemistry between Katie Gordon and Andy Parker
is really strong and they are really nailing the comedy,” said senior Hendrika McManus. The wide range of subplots, which includes
Shakespearian scenes, dancing and singing sequences, “Will highlight
the performances of all involved,” added student Ricker-Spicer. “We
are expanding most musical numbers from solos or duets to ensembles
of singers and dancers, and we have amazingly talented young performers
coming up through the program…this signals good shows to come.”
