At Hemlock Retreat
SCA Reps Select ‘Around the World’
As 2005 Homecoming Theme

By Susanna Sullivan (October 5, 2005)

Nearly 40 students and several faculty members spent two days working to plan crucial decisions for the year, especially those related to Homecoming and Spirit Week, at the Student Council Retreat at Hemlock Overlook the weekend before last.

One of the key decisions made during this retreat was the upcoming Homecoming theme which will be “Around the World.” This theme will feature five days in which each class will have a dress-up day centered on a city of the world.

The Gr8s chose Anchorage, Alaska; the freshmen selected Rome, Italy; the sophomores will be dressing in outfits befitting Cairo, Egypt; the juniors chose Los Angeles; and the seniors selected Dallas. (Some after-the-fact concerns over celebrating Dallas, considering the heated Washington Redskins-Dallas Cowboys football rivalry, have led some to consider switching the senior selection to Austin, or some other generic southwestern city.)

The activities of Spirit Week will include the dress-up days, kickball, the annual Powder-Puff game between the juniors and seniors, hall decorating contests, a pep rally, and a tailgate party before Friday night’s football game. For each day of Spirit Week, October 17-21, there will be opportunities for each class to earn spirit points.

While at Hemlock, the students enjoyed S’mores around the campfire and a leadership and team-building experience on Monday morning.  In activities intended to build trust and communication skills in a group, students participated in exercises including a zip line.

Ms.  Karin Tooze, SCA co-sponsor, said of the event, “This year was one of the most successful SCA retreats I’ve ever seen.  The students accomplished all of their Homecoming plans in an afternoon, which left time on Monday to participate in a ropes course.”
