Ret. Colonel Fred Cherry retold
the events that led to his capture and incarceration in Vietnam
to Mrs. Hawkesworth’s Modern World History class on Thursday.
During his presentation, which marked the end of the class’s
unit on the Vietnam War, he spoke of the strategies POWs employed
to retain their emotional well-being, his perspective on the
politics of the era, and how he adapted to life after release.
He also discussed how the experience has had a positive impact
on his current worldview and how he “learned to take nothing
for granted and give everyone an honest shake.” (Photo
