 ‘Nine Muses’ Publish 2nd Chapbook;
Continue Magazine’s Remake

By Caitlin Acosta (March 30, 2006)

Who are the Nine Muses? Calliope, the muse of poetry, Clio, the muse of history, Urania, muse of astronomy, Thalia, muse of comedy, Terpsichore, the muse of dance, Polyhymnia, muse of sacred poetry, Melpomene, muse of tragedy, Euterpe, muse of music, and Erato, muse of love poetry. And now Ms. Mears, Ana, Ashleigh and Ryan, muses of our school literary/arts magazine!

The second installment of the new “Nine Muses Literary/Arts Magazine” is recently hot off the press and is being distributed in the library and by numerous English teachers. The magazine formally known as “Tempo,” was modified this year by the “Nine Muses” editors Ryan Hinely and Ashleigh Luthman-Hackett, who decided it was time for a change.

Not only did the title of the magazine change, but it is now distributed four times a year, during each quarter, rather than just once at the end of the school year. The first three editions are smaller, the size of a chapbook, and the last, which will be published near the end of the school year, will be larger and have more content.

When asked why they decided to give “Tempo” a makeover, after almost 50 years of the same set-up, both editors replied that it was a much needed change. At the end of last school year, both Luthman-Hackett and Hinely were the only juniors out of the senior-run “Tempo” staff. They went to their then sponsor, Mr. Andy Fogle, to talk about plans for next year’s magazine.  “Some people had expressed dissatisfaction with the name “Tempo,” and the magazine was definitely not getting the attention it deserved,” said senior Hinely.

Added  to that, because there was only one edition per year, much of the work was put off until the end of the year, and then the magazine would be completed in one super stressful week or two. When the magazine came out, it didn’t always get a lot of attention from students because school was almost out and everyone was so restless and busy.

But this year the “Nine Muses” staff and their sponsor Ms. Alissa Mears are working hard to get the publicity that the magazine deserves.

“So far,” Hinely said, “our efforts have been successful,” although he predicts they will be even more successful in the future. “The first year has been rough. Membership has been a little disappointing, but hopefully next year there will be more students involved.”

The goal of “Nine Muses”? To get more students involved in the arts and inspire kids to be more creative and use their talents. “Seeing their work and their names published is a rewarding experience,” Hinely said, and with any luck more and more students will seek that.

This attitude is certainly displayed between the pages of the “Nine Muses” magazine. Near the back of the newest addition, there are a few words from the editors, including thanks to supporting teachers, and finally, a little endorsement that will hopefully bring more members to the club: “’Nine Muses’ meets Mondays after school in room A-132. Be heard, show up and/or submit your work, be it art, photography, poetry, drama, fiction, non-fiction, or whatever you can think of. We welcome all.”
