          In Virginia Beach Half-Marathon

With the Atlantic Ocean as an
inspiring backdrop and sporting the Mason Running Club t-shirt,
technology specialist Ms. Eileen Backofen gives a thumbs-up sign
as she approaches the finish line in last Sunday’s Shamrock Virginia
Beach Half-Marathon. This was the first time that Backofen had
run such a long race and she did it with eight other Mason teachers,
all of whom finished. “I’m so proud of the GM teachers who all
trained hard and finished strong.  It
was terrific to feel a part of a group with a common goal,” said
Backofen, now an accomplished half-marathon runner. The group ran
along the beautiful Atlantic Ocean, encouraging
one another to remain confident during the 13.1 mile route.  “I
was absolutely ecstatic!” said Backofen, portraying the sensation
derived from what is referred to as the “runner’s high.”  “I
never would have believed I could have run that far.” Backofen
is not the only participant who is proud of her team and individual
accomplishments.  English Teacher Ms. Tooze conveyed triumphant
thoughts as well. “I had a wonderful experience running the half
marathon.  I felt strong throughout the race and finished
with a great sense of pride,” said Tooze. The running club was
formed by experienced runner and Spanish teacher Renata Carvalho, who trained her fellow teachers during the past
several months and who was the only member to run the full marathon.
